Research Summary

Our research group program at McGill primarily focuses on seismic risk mitigation of infrastructure facilities. Through integrated experimental and computational research, we currently investigate factors that cause buildings to collapse during extreme loading. Our main goal is to provide advanced simulation tools that are validated with experimental data in order to improve seismic design provisions that will ultimately increase the safety margins of buildings against collapse. We are also working on the modeling and utilization of advanced technologies and high robustness steel materials that guarantee continuous functionality of a facility after extreme loading.

Our research agenda includes the following major topics:

  • Collapse assessment of structural steel systems under extreme loading

  • High performance steel materials for multi-hazard mitigation

  • Development and evaluation fo welding procedures for heavy assemblies and steel sections

  • Experimental methods in structural engineering

  • Advanced finite element nonlinear modeling and analysis for high performance computing

  • Fatigue and fracture of metals

  • Multi-hazard resilient structural systems

  • Structural component databases for performance-based earthquake engineering

  • Retrofit techniques for structural systems with innovative materials

  • Supplemental damping for design and retrofit of steel structures

  • Rapid earthquake damage assessment of infrastructure facilitie
